Venable has hired a close confidant of Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) for its government affairs group, the law firm announced Monday.
Lawrence Roberts, who most recently advised Kaine on the senator's transition to Congress after his election in November, joined Venable as a partner in its Washington and Tysons Corner, Va., offices. He will focus on Virginia-related matters concerning transportation and telecommunications, among other issues.
Roberts said Venable has a strong government affairs practice and Tysons Corner office, where he said he will spend about 75 percent of this time.
Prior to serving on Kaine's Senate transition team, Roberts was the chairman for the senator's congressional campaign. He also was Kaine's gubernatorial campaign chairman and served as a transition team adviser to him after he was elected as Virginia governor in November 2005. From 2006 to 2009, he served as Kaine's counselor.
Roberts also spent stints working at the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2012, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom from 2001 to 2005 and Davis Wright Tremaine from 1997 to 2001. At the law firms, he was a partner, focusing on communications law.
"Larry Roberts knows how to get government working to solve problems," Brock Landry, co-chairman of Venable’s government division, said in a written statement. "He has critical senior-level experience at the national, state and local levels and he understands how politics can often shape public policy."
