A Bermuda-based wireless telecommunications company has enlisted the help of Williams and Jensen to lobby Congress.
Eric Stewart, a principal at Williams & Jensen, filed a lobbying registration form to Congress on September 24 on behalf of Mobile TeleSystems Bermuda Limited. According to the lobbying form, Stewart will be lobbying on "market access issues."
Stewart was the former deputy assistant secretary for Europe/Eurasia at the Department of Commerce, appointed in 2003 by President George W. Bush.
The Bermuda-based company is an arm of Mobile TeleSystems OJSC, Russia's largest mobile operator. In August, the parent company hired R&R Partners' Mike Pieper to lobby on matters related to Uzbekistan. Late last month, the Uzbek authorities seized part of the parent company's assets in a tax dispute, according to news reports.
According to the parent company website, it had more than 100 million mobile subscribers in Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Belarus as of the end of last year.
Stewart did not respond to a request for comment.
