Hunton & Williams has bolstered its corporate practice in Washington with the addition of a new partner.
Scott Kimpel, former counsel to Securities and Exchange Commissioner Troy Paredes, returned to the private practice arena this week.
At the commission, Kimpel was the liaison between Paredes and senior staff, issuers, SEC registrants, investors, press and members of Congress. During his four-year tenure, Kimpel advised across all divisions of the SEC, but focused on the Division of Corporation Finance and the Division of Enforcement. Kimpel also helped with the commission's response to legislation, namely the Dodd-Frank Act and the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act.
"As I started mulling the return to private practice, I was looking for a firm that met a number of criteria," Kimpel said in an interview. "At Hunton, I found a firm that met all of them."
He said the firm's long history, collegial and collaborative environment and its regulatory practices contributed to his decision. His practice will focus on three areas: traditional transactions, securities compliance, and corporate governance and public policy.
"There is a unique experience that you gain by working at the agency," Kimpel said. "You get to understand how they solve problems."
