Starting next year, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services official will join Manatt Health Solutions, the lobbying arm of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, the firm announced Tuesday.
Joel Ario, former director of the Office of Health Insurance Exchanges within HHS, will join the law firm's Washington office as managing director, beginning Jan. 2, 2012. At the agency, Ario was charged with constructing the health insurance exchange initiatives under the Affordable Care Act.
Before joining Health and Human Services, Ario served as Pennsylvania insurance commissioner, which regulates the state’s $85 billion insurance industry.
“Joel’s work at the federal level crafting regulatory frameworks integral to health insurance exchange development, and his experience overseeing insurance regulation in two states, is a perfect complement to Manatt’s strategic engagements with states, insurers and provider organizations grappling with these complex issues,” William Bernstein, chair of Manatt’s healthcare division, said in a statement.
