It was a Cleary Gottlieb/ Mayer Brown smack down - which firm's Washington office employees could do most to improve their collective health?
On one side - 115 lawyers and staff from Mayer Brown, representing 41% of the office. On the other - 114 participants from Cleary, or 40% of the office.
Dubbed the West End Live Longer (“WELL”) Challenge, the contest took place from Sept. 22 to Nov. 30. Each participant could earn points weekly for doing things like eating a healthy amount of fruits and vegetables, drinking a healthy amount of water, exercising at least 30 minutes per day and attending healthy lifestyle seminars. In addition, participants earned credit for decreasing their “health ages”, the participant’s body age based on key lifestyle predictors.
The winner: Cleary Gottlieb, which earned 50% of the total points possible (Mayer Brown earned 46%). Combined, participants from both firms lost 159 health age years, and 24% of participants reported an improvement in their health age over the course of the challenge.
“Our firm, in particular the Human Resources team, had been looking for meaningful ways to encourage and reinforce healthy behaviors,” said Cleary Gottlieb partner Kenneth Bachman in press release. “And with our new cafeteria, which opened late last year, we had the ability to support this challenge and ensure participants always had access to healthy alternatives.”
As for Mayer Brown, the firm announced it wants a rematch in 2011. In the meantime, the team is taking their defeat gracefully. “The Challenge raised the morale of both offices and brought together attorneys and staff,” said Mayer Brown partner Robert Jenkins. “We're lighter by weight and happier in spirit."
