Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, is reportedly relinquishing control of Liberty Central, an organization with Tea Party connections that she founded earlier this year. Buoyed by the Tea Party movement, it took a prominent role in political and policy battles in recent months.
The Washington Post is reporting that she decided to step back from her leadership role at least in part because she had become a "distraction" that was hampering the group's work. Critics have voiced concern that donations to her organization by unnamed groups and individuals could pose a conflict of interest for Justice Thomas if he rules on cases involving donors. Her organization also took stands -- such as asserting that the Obama health care legislation is unconstitutional -- that were causing awkwardness for the justice. We reported on the launch of the organization's Web site in February.
Another online report on Slate suggests that Liberty Central will merge with another Virginia-based organization, the Patrick Henry Center for Individual Liberty. Check back for further updates on this story.
