The Bar Association of the District of Columbia celebrated a group of judges Tuesday evening at the federal trial court in Washington, honoring incoming jurists and those who are retiring or taking senior status.
Bar association president Annamaria Steward, associate dean at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, praised the work of retiring judges and welcomed the new judges to the bench, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. Kagan did not attend the event, held in the atrium of the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse.
Among the retiring judges or those taking senior status were Judge Paul Friedman of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and D.C. Superior Court Judges Geoffrey Alprin, Jerry Byrd, Cheryl Long and Odessa Vincent. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, an honoree who retired earlier this year, did not attend the event.
The newest D.C. Superior Court judges—Marisa Demeo, Todd Edelman, Milton Lee Jr., Stuart Nash and Judith Smith—were also honored.
