The Supreme Court is seeking applicants for the position of reporter of decisions, a job created by statute that entails preparing and officially publishing Supreme Court opinions. The job ad lists the annual pay range as between $155,500 and $179,700. The application period runs until Oct. 7.
The person hired will replace veteran Frank Wagner, who retires at the end of this month. As Wagner revealed in our recent interview here and here, the job has its challenges, even in the era of spell-checking and high technology. For example, even though Wagner has a preference on the question of how to turn words ending in 's' into possessives (i.e. Congress', not Congress's) he has chosen to defer to the varying wishes of different justices on the matter.
The job ad calls for a lawyer with managerial experience, preferably in the legal publishing field. It also states: "demonstrated aptitude for prompt, succinct, and accurate legal writing required." Translation: check, re-check, and triple-check your application for typos. (Hat tip to Dan Kahan.)
