Former Sen. Mel Martinez is leaving DLA Piper for a job as JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s chairman of Florida, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced Martinez' new position today, in a statement that said he will help the bank continue expanding in the region. Martinez and partners at DLA Piper could not immediately be reached for comment.
Martinez, a Florida Republican and former secretary of Housing and Urban Development, joined DLA Piper less than a year ago after stepping down from the Senate (for an earlier BLT post on Martinez, click here). The firm held a reception welcoming Martinez and another big hire, former Senate. Majority Leader Tom Daschle, in January.
UPDATE: DLA Piper has issued a statement confirming that Martinez is leaving the firm. In the statement, Thomas Boyd, partner and co-chair of DLA Piper’s regulatory and government affairs group, said that "it has been a privilege to have had Mel’s leadership and depth of experience among our distinguished group of government affairs attorneys."
Great, since he was ineffective in Washington he will do no better at his new job!
