The House Judiciary Committee is continuing its investigation of U.S. Justice Department memos that attempted to define the line between interrogation and torture. Its latest effort: an interview with Judge Jay Bybee, former head of the department's Office of Legal Counsel.
The committee today released a transcript of its May 26 interview with Bybee, now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. Click here for the transcript and related materials.
At 283 pages, the transcribed interview is likely to be poured over by both critics and supporters of the George W. Bush administration and its antiterrorism policies.
Seven members of the Judiciary Committee questioned Bybee for a full day, according to the transcript. Joining them were teams of lawyers for all sides, including the Democrats’ chief counsel for oversight and investigations, Elliot Mincberg, and a Latham & Watkins team, led by Maureen Mahoney, representing Bybee.
