The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a Washington-based nonprofit known for bringing civil rights litigation, earlier this week registered to lobby the federal government for the first time.
Barbara Arnwine, the group's executive director, said the Lawyers' Committee hired its first public policy director, Tanya Clay House, four months ago. The group expects to work more closely with the Obama administration than it did with the Bush administration, Arnwine said, and will also be contacting federal agencies. "There’s just a real need to work more closely with the federal agencies," she said.
House, previously a lobbyist for People for the American Way, said she will lobby on several issues, including judicial nominations, the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind law, and voting rights issues. "The organization just has always felt the need to make sure we’re kind of in the public sphere talking about the issues," she said.
