What the President Wants: The Wall Street Journal reports that President Barack Obama has reignited his push for a government-run health insurance plan just as key senators moved closer to a bipartisan deal that leaves out the public plan. At a Labor Day rally of AFL-CIO members in Cincinnati, Obama took aim at Republicans for what he said was a lack of a solution for fixing the health system.

The New York Times reports that out of work Americans are volunteering for political campaigns in unprecedented numbers and finding that their talents are much desired by the political hopefuls they're working for.
9th Circuit Blasts Feds: A panel of judges for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit blasted the federal government's practice of detaining innocent Americans under the federal material witness statute in the wake of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The Recorder reports via Law.com that the panel called the practice "repugnant" and "a painful reminder of some of the most ignominious chapters of our national history."
