Déjà vu All Over Again: President Barack Obama is no stranger to the difficulty of attempting to pass health care reform, The Washington Post reports. As an Illinois state senator in 2004, Obama faced similar challenges in his effort to pass the Health Care Justice Act, which tested his skills as a community organizer and legislator.
A Lemon of a Deal: According to a congressional oversight report, the federal government is "highly unlikely" to recover the billions it paid out to automakers General Motors and Chrysler to stave off their collapse. The report also calls on the Treasury Department to be more transparent and provide a legal analysis justifying the use of
financial rescue funds for the automakers, The Washington Post reports.
I Strenuously Object: The New York Law Journal reports via Law.com that objections have been filed have been filed against the $195 million fee request by plaintiffs attorneys from Bernstein Liebhard, Milberg and other firms who won a $586 million settlement in a massive federal initial public offering litigation. Edward Siegel of Cleveland is leading the opposition to the fee request.
Journalist Freed: Following a U.K.-led commando raid, Stephen Farrell, a New York Times reporter held captive for four days by militants in Afghanistan, was able to escape his captors, Bloomberg reports. A member of the British military died along with a local interpreter in the raid.
