We've confirmed that Gregory Garre, who was deputy solicitor general and then briefly solicitor general at the end of the Bush Administration, has begun work at Latham & Watkins in its D.C. office. As with any former SG, this is a significant catch.
Garre, a former clerk to the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist, headed the appellate practice at Hogan & Hartson before becoming deputy SG in 2005. At that firm, Garre counted John Roberts Jr., now chief justice, as a mentor. In June 2008, President George W. Bush nominated him as solicitor general replacing Paul Clement, and in October the Senate confirmed Garre. He served until the change in administrations and has been teaching since at George Washington University Law School.
We have calls in to the firm and to Garre and will report further details when available.
