The White House announced today that the president will nominate Cynthia Quarterman, a partner in Washington-based Steptoe & Johnson, to head the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
In her private practice, Quarterman advises clients on matters related to pipeline assets and acquisitions; federal land minerals management; Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas facilities; as well as surface transportation, alternative energy and telecommunications.
From March 1995 to August 1999, Quarterman served as director of the Minerals Management Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In that role, she was responsible for ensuring compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Air Act, the Coastal Zone Management Act, the Endangered Species Act and other laws. She is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law.
