Gerald Masoudi, former chief counsel of the Food and Drug Administration, has joined Covington & Burling's Washington office as a partner and co-chair of the firm's food and drug practice group.
At the FDA, Masoudi was responsible for supervising the agency’s involvement in civil and criminal litigation and investigations, providing legal review of warning letters, regulations, and providing advice to the agency's commissioner and its senior leadership. His term expired in January.
Masoudi's time in government also included stints as the FDA's principal deputy chief counsel from 2004 to 2005 and as deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department's Antitrust Division from 2005 to 2007. He was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis for 10 years before going into government.
Masoudi, who started at Covington last week, says he is looking forward to getting back into private practice.
"Covington takes a broader view of the industry, which is one of the things that attracted me to the firm," Masoudi says. "The firm understands that the companies that make medical products are responsible for great innovations and for improving people's lives. I'm looking forward to working with the firm to help those companies advance their goals in bringing products to the market and dealing with issues they might face as they arise."
