Reps. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Lamar Smith, R-Texas, have followed through on their threat from a day ago to explore the impeachment of a federal judge in Houston.
Conyers, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Smith, the committee’s top Republican, have introduced a House resolution that would authorize an investigation of U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent of the Southern District of Texas. Kent was sentenced to 33 months in prison Monday for lying to investigators about whether he sexually abused his secretary.
Kent, who has refused to resign, has signaled his intent to retire on disability. Legislators hope to prevent that by removing him from office first, and the Judiciary Committee could take up the proposal for an inquiry as soon as Wednesday.
Spokespeople for Conyers and Smith declined to comment, saying the two-page resolution (pdf) speaks for itself.
