Americans United for Life, a leading anti-abortion rights group, has issued a negative appraisal of many of the presumed short-list possible nominees to replace retiring Justice David Souter. The group's analysis seems to guarantee that abortion rights will become a rallying cry in the coming debate, no matter whom President Barack Obama nominates.
In a release announcing the analysis Charmaine Yoest, president of the organization, says, "The records of these potential nominees are absolutely the most radically pro-abortion our country has ever seen. Every potential nominee is pro-abortion and would advance President Obama's radical agenda." She vowed to "make the pro-life voice heard" during the confirmation process.
The person-by-person assessment reserves its harshest words for Diane Wood, judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. "Judge Wood has placed her pro-abortion ideology above her judicial duty," the group states, citing rulings she has authored on laws restricting abortions and on the rights of abortion clinic protesters. Also discussed are Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, Leah Ward Sears, Jennifer Granholm, Kathleen Sullivan, Deval Patrick and Cass Sunstein.
Why does this website call it "Anti-Abortion Rights Group." That is a bit cumbersome. If it does not want to play into the Pro-Choice/Pro-Life rhetoric that these sides have adopted, it should find a more sincere way of describing Americans United for Life. The cumbersome descriptor used above only belies the political bent of this Blog.
