Jobs: The U.S. shed 663,000 jobs in March, ratcheting the unemployment rate up to 8.5 percent, the highest level in 25 years. Even if the economy begins to rebound soon, economists say we can expect the losses to continued through 2010, the New York Times reports.
Appeals Picks: The White House announced the selection of two new appeals court picks, including one for the Fourth Circuit. If confirmed Judge Andre Davis of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland Baltimore Division will make the trip to Richmond, where the AP reports he could have a sizeable influence on civil rights cases.
UBS: The Justice Department has indicted its first UBS client, charging Steven Rubenstein, an accountant in Boca Raton, Fla., with filing a false income tax return. While the words “accountant” and “Boca Raton,” don’t necessarily scream international intrigue, Rubenstein allegedly transferred as much as $3 million through his Swiss bank account without telling the IRS, writes the American Lawyer.
