Mayer Brown has confirmed that the firm is cutting 45 lawyers and 90 administrative staff members across the United States.
The Am Law Daily reports that in addition to the layoffs, the firm is deferring the start date for most incoming associates to Jan. 19, 2010. Those who start later will receive a $5,000 monthly stipend and medical benefits during the deferral period.
In a statement, firm chairman James Holzhauer said, "We are taking these additional steps to save jobs where possible and maintain relationships with talented, experienced and valued lawyers.” The firm currently employs about 1,000 lawyers in North America, 500 in Europe and 300 in Asia.
