Mark Levy, Washington-based counsel and chair of Kilpatrick Stockton's Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy practice, died in the firm's D.C. office this morning, the BLT has confirmed with lawyers both inside and outside the firm.
"We in the legal community are losing someone who is hard to replace,” says solo practitioner Dennis Gingold, who has worked with Levy and calls him one of the District’s finest appellate lawyers. “This is a tough time.”
Although I only met Mark a few times at significant family events, my heart goes out to his sister, Sue, and his brother, Michael. Their lives will forever be changed as a result of this tradegy. Both of them, as well as their families, are in our thoughts and prayers as they struggle with the sudden death of their brother. Mark's death is like ripples in a pond-it keeps on affecting more and more people, and continues to touch more lives. How sad that he never knew the extent of his friends and families love and concern. Our only wish is that some understanding will come with time. We ask that all who knew him will eventually share any experiences that will allow his family to have some closure to this tradegy.

I am Mark's first cousin and have no answers as to why someone so talented, well respected and loved by his family would want to take his own life, even with the loss of a job.

This is so very sad. I lost a 20 year old son to suicide. There are no real answers - my heart goes out to his wife and children who will forever carry the sadness in his death.

Mark was a wonderful person and a terrific lawyer. This is a great tragedy. We were classmates and friends in both college and law school and clerked for the same judge. Later, we worked together on a case a few years ago.
My heart goes out to his wife and two children. All who knew him will miss him and always wonder if there was something more we could have done to prevent this terrible tragedy.
