Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr is bringing back Todd Steggerda as a partner in its defense and national security practice in Washington. Since Jan. 1, 2007, Steggerda had been serving as chief counsel to the John McCain 2008 presidential campaign.
Steggerda, who started at Wilmer in 2000, left the firm on Dec. 31, 2006 - just one year after being promoted to partner in the firm. The next day, he started working with the McCain campaign. Upon leaving the firm, Steggerda had no deal in place about returning to Wilmer and says “it was a straight separation.”
With the campaign, Steggerda, 43, oversaw the "day-to-day operations" of a group of about 20 lawyers who handled a range of matters for the campaign including federal and state election issues, employment matters, intellectual property and licensing issues, and insurance coverage.
In his second stint with the firm, Steggerda says he’ll be involved with similar issues to those he handled in his first go-around. Steggerda represents clients who are dealing with federal government investigations.
After McCain lost the election, Steggerda says he never engaged in any “serious dialogue” with any other firms, adding “Wilmer is home for me. Quite honestly, I didn't want to go to any other firms.”
When asked what he would be doing if McCain had been elected the 44th president of the United States, Steggerda says, “It’s very difficult to say.”
