Tom Daschle may have withdrawn his name from consideration for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services after it came to light that he hadn’t paid about $140,000 in back taxes -- but not before filing his financial disclosure report with the Office of Government Ethics.
Daschle, a special public policy adviser with Alston & Bird, reports making $2.1 million with the firm in the last two years in wages and bonuses.
The former senator reports making another $2 million for consulting work he performed for InterMedia Advisors, a private equity investment fund focusing on the media industry. Daschle collected director fees from The Freedom Forum, Mascoma Corp., BP Corp., Prime BioSolutions, and CB Richard Ellis for a total of $491,773. Daschle also reports giving 26 speeches for an additional $500,000.
Daschle’s withdrawal from consideration marked the most prominent casualty of President Obama’s nomination effort involving a candidate not paying their taxes in full.
Dennis Garris, the managing partner of Alston & Bird’s Washington office, says the firm “does not want to comment at this stage.”
“We haven’t put together any official statement. We may put together a statement in the future,” Garris says.
