Attorney General Michael Mukasey this morning urged Congress to pass a $550 million anti-crime aid package to Mexico and Central America while promoting international cooperation as a way to keep up with multinational crime rings.
“By working together, we can strengthen the rule of law and the administration of justice, and we can combat transnational criminal threats,” Mukasey told his counterparts from 34 countries at the Organization of American States. “The Merida Initiative is an example of such a partnership: through that initiative, we hope to strengthen further the courageous efforts of the governments in Mexico and Central America to confront drugs, gangs, and violent crime.”
Here’s Mukasey speech, which was covered in this dispatch by The Associated Press.
