An attorney from Foley Hoag’s D.C. office has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ecuador to stop Colombia from the aerial spraying of coca plants on the border between the two countries. Paul Reichler, a parter at Foley Hoag who practices international law, filed the suit in the International Court of Justice in The Hague today.
According to the lawsuit, the herbicides Colombia uses as part of its anti-drug efforts drift across the border, allegedly making people sick as well as harming livestock and the environment.
The suit seeks to prevent Colombia from spraying the border area and to obtain reparations to Ecuador for any damages from the spraying. Reichler is leading a team of international law experts, including professors from Europe and South America.
Tensions have been high between the two countries ever since the Colombian military crossed into Ecuador to attack members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) at the beginning of March.
