Fortune magazine just came out with its 100 Best Companies to Work For 2008, and though the legal industry isn’t exactly known for having warm and fuzzy work environments, several firms made the list. Arnold & Porter ranked the highest at 19, and this is the sixth consecutive year the firm has had the honor.
What makes A&P such a great spot to spend the workweek? According to Fortune, the firm has 12 weeks of paid maternity leave and profit sharing of 7.5% of salary. Also, health insurance is tied to how much money each person makes. If an employee makes less, the person pays a lower premium. Arnold & Porter is one of two companies headquartered in the District that made the cut. The other is Marriott International, which came in at number 72.
Other firms on the list are Nixon Peabody, Perkins Coie, Alston & Bird, and Bingham McCutchen. Google ranked number one.
I like the idea of insurance premiums tied to salary, that just makes sense in the grander scheme of things. I think more and more it is the over all attitude and culture of a place that makes it a great place to work because that leads to policies geared toward reinforcing company cultures.
