Two of Sen. Larry Craig’s advisers are claiming the embattled Idaho republican decided not to run for re-election in 2008, even before allegations that he solicited sex from an undercover policeman in an airport bathroom came to light. While he would not give a specific date, Craig’s spokesman Dan Whiting told CNN the decision was made “well before all of this broke.”
Craig recently announced he "intended" to resign (and not that he definitely would do so) at the end of the month, purposely leaving himself room to renege on the decision. Now there's a chance he may not go after all. Despite this maneuvering, his advisers say the revelation that he did not intend to seek re-election shows he’s not trying to hold onto power; rather, they insist he just wants to clear his name.
In June, Craig, a conservative Christian, pled guilty to a disorderly lewd conduct charge stemming from his arrest in the bathroom of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
