Judge Reggie Walton has made clear that he faced many challenges in deciding to sentence Scooter Libby to 30 months behind bars. But that ruling came with some unexpected and disturbing consequences.
During a hearing today, Walton said he had received a number of "angry and mean-spirited" letters and phone calls threatening both him and his family.
Most thought Walton's decision had been too harsh, but some attacked him from the other side. Initially, he threw the letters away, but when the tone escalated, including some "wishing bad things on me and my family," Walton said, he saved them "should anything happen."
Still, Walton noted, those "hateful" messages "cannot and will not have an affect" on his ruling.
