The D.C. Voting Rights Act is slated to hit the House floor tomorrow or Friday, according to the office of D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D). Norton and Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) introduced the bill, H.R. 328, in January. The bill passed the Judiciary Committee last week, surpassing prior efforts in the decades-old fight for D.C. voting rights, which has many advocacy groups lobbying on behalf of the bill thinking it will pass in the 110th Congress. This comes despite President Bush's statement earlier this week that he would veto any D.C. voting rights legislation that comes across his desk. See next week's Legal Times for the response to Bush's threat and why lobbying groups believe they are gaining momentum.
