It wasn’t all just blues and ethics rules at the bar conference on Monday. In the grand tradition of the democratic process (many thanks to the Athenians for getting that ball rolling), the not-so-huddled masses authorized the bar to speak publicly on funding initiatives recommended by the D.C. Access to Justice Commission. The D.C. Bar Board of Governors called a special membership meeting at the conclusion of the conference, in which bar members voted unanimously to allow the board and bar management to speak on the issue for the next five years. The vote comes after the D.C. Council’s appropriation – at the behest of the commission – of $3.2 million to fund civil legal services for fiscal year 2007.
