Harriet Miers: Now Lobbying for Pakistan

Former White House chief counsel Harriet Miers is now a lobbyist for the Embassy of Pakistan and the Pakistan Peoples Party. On her foreign agent registration short form for Locke Lord Strategies, a subsidiary of Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell, the former Supreme Court nominee cites her work as part and parcel of Locke Lord's effort to "promote better understanding of the country's recent political, social, and economic developments" and line up state visits to Washington.

Neither Miers nor her colleagues at Locke Lord could immediately be reached for comment.

What does President Pervez Musharraf's resignation mean for Locke Lord? Probably not much. The firm has represented Asif Ali Zardari, the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party and an opponent of Musharraf, since March, when the firm was retained to promote democracy and pressure Pakistan’s government to investigate former PPP head Benazir Bhutto's assassination.

While Locke Lord began with only Zardari and the PPP as a client, it quickly moved on to representing the nation as a whole. In May, the firm began working for Pakistan’s embassy, which is paying $900,000 for a year of its services. It retains the PPP, however, as a separate pro-bono client.
