McDermott Will & Emery has added a pair of health care attorneys to its Washington office.
Dale Van Demark and Jason Caron were both previously with Epstein Becker & Green and have focuses within the health care umbrella.
Van Demark focuses on mergers and acquisitions in the health care industry, while Caron represents health care and life sciences organizations in legal, regulatory, reimbursement and policy matters. Both partners agreed that McDermott's global platform and deep health care bench were attractive features of the firm.
"My practice has increasingly expanded overseas over the years," Van Demark said. "McDermott, with its presence and commitment aboard, seems like the perfect fit and logical choice."
Van Demark also has experience handling hospital-hospital and hospital-physician deals. He said that the slumping global economy has created a volatile health care market, which has driven up the number of transactions in the field. "I expect to see that continue in 2013, more than likely in 2014 and beyond," Van Demark said. "That is a trend I think will continue until the economy stabilizes."
Caron's practice includes navigating coding, coverage, payment, medical necessity, comparative research, certification, enrollment and payer participation issues. He said that the recent fiscal cliff legislation included health care provisions in addition to its high profile tax consequences.
"It has a number of health care provisions that our clients need to understand and respond to," Caron said.
