Bradley Arant Boult Cummings has added a team of litigators to its Washington office.
John Parker Sweeney and T. Sky Woodward join the firm as partners, while Kevin Mattingly joins as an associate. All three were previously with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice in Baltimore.
Sweeney focuses his practice on defending class action and mass tort litigation related to product liability, consumer protection, environmental and toxic tort claims. He currently serves as first vice president of the Defense Research Institute.
Woodward represents real estate and financial services companies in matters related to environmental, consumer finance and commercial litigation. She also counsels clients in the manufacturing industry on mass tort and product liability class action.
In an interview, Sweeney said that his and Woodward's long-running friendships with Bradley Arant attorneys and mutual client relationships contributed to the move. He said that since their practice is national in scope and largely regulatory based, Washington was a more suitable place to be based.
"Washington is a national legal market," Sweeney said. "With an address anywhere else, you often have to spend a lot of time explaining the scope of your practice."
In addition, Sweeney said that an increasing amount of work is conducted with the Consumer Product Safety Commission as well as other regulatory agencies. Now that the team is based in Washington, it will provide greater access for them and their clients.
"Being here in Washington provides access not only to those agencies but to the practitioners that specialize in those areas," he said.
