Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld has added a team of energy regulatory attorneys to its Washington office, the firm announced this week.
Partners Suedeen Kelly and George "Chip" Cannon Jr. along with senior counsel Cynthia Marlette join the energy regulatory practice. All were previously with Patton Boggs.
Kelly, a former commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, said in an interview that members of the team were impressed with the strength of the firm's energy practice.
Kelly served three terms as FERC commissioner under both President George W. Bush and subsequently Barack Obama. She focuses her practice on electricity, natural gas, oil, hydro-electric and smart grid matters.
"The energy industry is facing a lot of new challenges and that always means new legal issues to be decided and new regulatory issues to be involved in," Kelly said.
Cannon focuses his practice on regulatory and commercial matters related to the production and delivery of electric energy. His clients include electric utilities, independent power producers, oproject developers, energy traders, financial institutions and manufactures of renewable technologies.
