McGuireWoods has added a partner to its tax and employee benefits department in Washington.
D. French Slaughter III, formerly a principal with Deloitte & Touche, focuses his practice on franchise tax, sales and use tax and property tax. Some of his clients include companies from the aerospace and defense, telecommunications and media industries.
Before joining Deloitte, Slaughter was a partner with McGuireWoods from 1984 to 2000. Before that he was special assistant to the assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice's Tax Division.
In an interview, Slaughter said that his return to McGuireWoods, he hopes, will be his final home.
"I'm looking to finish out the rest of my career at the firm that I knew with the great clients that I have," Slaughter said. He said that tax litigation, particularly bankruptcy issues, has been bolstered by the recession.
"The states are hurting for money and they tend to get into disagreements with taxpayers," Slaughter said. "The IRS is not shy about pursuing tax issues either, especially in these hard economic times."
