Baker & McKenzie has added a partner to its tax practice in Washington, the firm announced Monday.
Rafic Barrage, formerly a partner with Mayer Brown, focuses his practice on international tax issues for domestic corporations operating overseas and foreign individuals and companies investing and doing business in the United States.
In an interview, Barrage said that Baker's global reach was a main reason for his lateral move.
"My areas of focus in terms of industries have always been shipping clients, but also a fair amount of high tech and software areas," Barrage said. "The IRS is currently looking at a number of shipping tax issues these days."
Barrage said that while his business is split fairly evenly between foreign and domestic companies, recently there has been more of a shift toward outbound business. Most of the inbound work, he said, has been from foreign-owned shipping companies.
