Three local senior judges – one on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and two on the District of Columbia Superior Court – are up for review and reappointment.
The District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure announced yesterday that Court of Appeals Senior Judge John Steadman and Superior Court senior judges Ronald Wertheim and Peter Wolf have asked for reappointment.
Members of the bar and the public have until September 14 to submit comments to the commission about any of the judges.
Steadman was appointed to the city's highest appeals court in 1985 and took senior status in 2004. After earning his J.D. in 1955 from Harvard Law School, he spent several years in private practice. From 1963 to 1970, he served in the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel as deputy undersecretary of the U.S. Army for international affairs, as special assistant to the Secretary of Defense and as general counsel to the Department of the Air Force. He worked in academia for the 15 years leading up to his bench appointment.
Wertheim was appointed to the Superior Court in 1981 and took senior status in 1992. Before that, he was a member of the Merit Systems Protection Board and previously worked in private practice at Ginsburg, Feldman & Bress in Washington. After earning his law degree in 1957 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Wertheim's career spanned the Peace Corps, the Philadelphia public defender's office and academia.
Wolf was appointed to the bench in 1979 and took senior status in 1994. After earning his LL.B. in 1962, he worked as a lawyer for the District of Columbia government, a staff attorney with President Johnson's Commission on Crime in the District of Columbia and a senior research attorney with the Institute of Criminal Law and Procedure at Georgetown University Law Center. He worked in private practice from 1970 until he joined the court.
The commission reviews senior judges on both courts for reappointment every four years, or every two years for judges over the age of 74.
