Sidley Austin has added a former lobbyist for U.S. private forest owners to its government strategies group in Washington, the firm announced Thursday.
Catherine Karen, National Alliance of Forest Owners government affairs vice president from 2008 to 2012, is a counsel at Sidley. She is focusing on environmental and energy matters.
Karen wrote in an e-mail that Sidley's global presence and good reputation drew her to the firm.
"I was excited at the prospect of joining a firm of its caliber and being part of building its new Government Strategies practice," she wrote. "Further, given the reputation of its environmental and energy practices, I felt that my background and skill set would further augment their already existing excellent legal and regulatory expertise."
Before joining the forest owners group, Karen led the government relations department of the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (formerly the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association) from 2007 to 2008. She also held posts that included Environmental Protection Agency congressional affairs deputy associate administrator, Legal Services Corp. government relations deputy director and legislative assistant for Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.)
