An attorney with Covington & Burling was tapped to lead the mergers division of Ireland's Competition Authority, which is charged with enforcing Irish and European competition law, the firm announced Friday.
Stephen Calkins, an of counsel in the Washington-based firm for the past 13 years, was one of three appointees named to the commission. He starts his new job December 1.
Formerly, Calkins served as general counsel to the Federal Trade Commission. He also served as associate vice president of Wayne State University and a professor at its law school in Detroit, Mich.
“Steve brings a lot to the table given his deep experience as an enforcer and in advising American and European companies on how to comply with antitrust laws throughout the world,” Tom Barnett and Deborah Garza, co-chairs of the firm’s global antitrust and consumer law practice group, said in a statement.
