Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) is among the many members of Congress spending part of the August recess hosting fundraisers away from Washington.
Smith, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is planning to raise money in New York on Sunday and Monday around the beginning of the U.S. Open tennis tournament. That’s according to a schedule of fundraisers obtained by the Sunlight Foundation, which tracks fundraising events.
The cost of attendance is $2,500, and the event will benefit Smith’s Longhorn PAC, which has raised about $145,000 this year, according to federal filings.

It’s not clear what impact Hurricane Irene will have on Smith’s event. A spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment today. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) has a U.S. Open fundraising event scheduled for Monday, according to the Sunlight Foundation.
