Dave Donovan, the chief operating officer and general counsel for the Washington Redskins, is leaving his position to rejoin Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, the team announced Monday.
"Dave is an outstanding lawyer who in his 20 years with us had a diverse and successful litigation practice and we look forward to welcoming him back," Bill Perlstein, Wilmer's co-managing partner, said in a statement.
Before joining the Redskins organization six years ago, Donovan served as counsel for owner Daniel Snyder. Most notably, while with the Redskins, Donovan has represented Snyder in his defamation suit against The Washington City Paper, the district's alternative weekly newspaper.
"Even though he is returning to the law firm where he worked prior to joining the team, he will continue to consult with the Redskins as he did prior to joining the organization," Snyder said in a statement.
In a statement released by the Redskins, Donovan cited "personal reasons" for his departure.
