Clean Records: With the worst job market in years and criminal background checks that reach further that ever into the past, there's a surge in job-hunters seeking legal help expunging their criminal records, the Wall Street Journal reports. States are setting aside tens of thousands of convictions—close to 50 percent more than last year in some states. As a result, legal-aid organizations have stepped up efforts to help the job seekers.
D.C. Sniper: John Allen Muhammad, who along with a 17-year-old accomplice killed 10 people in the Washington area in October 2002, was executed last night by lethal injection. Muhammad, 48, better known as the D.C. Sniper, was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m., according to the Washington Post.
Insider Trading: A 59-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y. man pleaded guilty to criminal charges in an insider-trading case where he allegedly received tips from an investment banker at UBS AG. Michael Koulouroudis pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and a single count of securities fraud, according to the Wall Street Journal. He faces up to two years in prison and also agreed to forfeit $198,000 as part of a plea agreement with the government. He's scheduled for sentencing in February.
Balloon Boy: The Boulder District Attorney said yesterday that he will not file charges against Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden for his disclosure that county social service workers were investigating the family of so-called balloon boy Falcon Heene. Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett said he found no evidence Alderden improperly disclosed the investigation because he did not disclose any specifics, according to the Coloradoan.
