In a follow-up e-mail today, Keith Appell, a CRC Public Relations employee who handled PR for the Federalist Society at their convention this week, said that barring photographers from last night's keynote address by Justice Samuel Alito Jr. was the result of a mistake.
Appell wrote that the Federalist Society had forwarded the guidelines for Alito's speech, which allowed for still photography, to CRC Public Relations. But with several people at the firm out of the office due to illness, including himself, Appell said "we just missed it." He apologized for the mistake.
Earlier today, Kathy Arberg, the court spokeswoman, said "The justice's policy was that the event was open to still cameras and pencil press," and that the Federalist Society was informed of that policy before the event.
