Umpiring is notoriously subjective and decidedly "non-mechanical," as any real baseball fan or student of baseball history can attest. The strike zone as described in the rulebook is seldom the one actually employed by umpires--who, by the way, are known to incorporate a kind of "empathy" in their calls...
