Chicago-based Jenner & Block announced today it laid off 34 staff members in the firm’s Chicago and Washington offices. Firm spokesman Murray Coffey would not disclose how many staffers each office lost.
According to a statement from Jenner’s managing partner Susan Levy, the firm needed to adjust its staffing and expenses because of the slow market. Levy also said advances in technology and “collaborative approaches,” such as teaming secretarial support for groups of associates, have allowed the firm to be more efficient and eliminated the need for several staff positions, such as trainers for secretaries.
Levy added that no lawyers were affected by the layoffs. Jenner’s D.C. office is home to 76 lawyers.
