Closing Guantanamo: President-elect Barack Obama plans within his first week in office to issue an executive order to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but it could be a long process, two people with knowledge of the plan told The Wall Street Journal on Monday. An order regarding interrogation methods is also planned for the first week, the newspaper reports. The New York Times carries a similar report here.
Grand Jury for Steroids: The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is planning to meet "in the next few weeks" with Brian McNamee, a former trainer for pitcher Roger Clemens, The New York Times reports. The newspaper says that the meeting could be a prelude to a grand jury investigation into whether Clemens lied under oath when he testified before Congress that he had never used performance-enhancing drugs.
New FCC Chief: The Washington Post reports that Julius Genachowski, former chief counsel to then-Chairman Reed Hundt of the Federal Communications Commission, has been chosen as the next FCC chairman. The newspaper cites "one source close to the transition team and two sources close to key lawmakers." Genachowski was a classmate of Obama's at Harvard Law School and has been mentioned for the job for at least two months.
Staying Home: The New York Law Journal, via Law.com, has the details of a judge's decision Monday to allow Bernard Madoff to stay out of jail while he awaits trial—as well as the details of several new restrictions Madoff must follow. All his outgoing mail will be searched, and Madoff "will be required to conduct a complete inventory of property in his Manhattan apartment."
