Williams Mullen has added Charles James Jr., onetime special assistant to then-Assistant Attorney General Michael Chertoff, as a partner in its Richmond office.
James, who joined the firm on July 14, was most recently an assistant U.S. attorney in Richmond and did a brief stint in the U.S. attorney’s office in Alexandria.
As a federal prosecutor in Richmond, James says he worked to bring down large-scale drug operations, often focusing on money laundering issues.
“Coming to Richmond was supposed to be a six-month detail. It’s turned into six years,” James says.
At Williams Mullen, James says he will focus his practice on complex civil litigation, white-collar defense, government investigations, corporate compliance, and internal investigations.
While he seeks to bring in new clients, he says he will be working closely with Williams Mullen’s litigation team to advise the firm’s existing clients.
“We’ve already got a huge litigation section here, so I’m looking forward to getting in there and putting the skills that I worked on in prosecutions to use,” James says.
