The University of California, the largest higher educational system in the country, has hired Alan Hoffman as its senior vice president for external relations.
The hire amounts to an endorsement of Hoffman's previous work for the university system: He's been on contract for the last four months. The lobbyist has a lengthy track record in both California and Washington. During the 1992 presidential campaign and transition he served as a special assistant to First Lady Hillary Clinton. In the years since, he's been a vice president of external affairs for the RAND Corp. a chief of staff to Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), and an assistant U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia.
Hoffman will receive a $370,000 salary, plus benefits including a car allowance and a weekly day of telecommuting.
