Human Rights First named Elisa Massimino its new executive director and chief executive officer. She has been the organization’s Washington director for more than a decade.
In her 17 years with the human-rights advocacy group, Massimino has led a campaign for a humane standard of prisoner treatment across all U.S. agencies. She has also been working to shape opinions on the detention and interrogation of prisoners.
Massimino says she hopes in her new position to continue building coalitions of former military and current law-enforcement personnel.
“The organization’s trademark is an ability to bring people together around common values, so we’ll build on that,’ Massimino says. “Our agenda is to really restore that historic consensus that the protection of human rights and policies that promote human rights are very much in the national interest of the United States. That will be a central mission for the organization under my leadership.”
