Sidley's Thomas Green Defends Puerto Rico Governor
Puerto Rico's Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila, who was indicted earlier today on public corruption and campaign law violations, has hired Thomas Green of the D.C. office of Sidley Austin to represent him.
Green, a D.C.-based partner who manages the firm's federal and state investigation and white-collar defense practice groups, has a reputation as a brawler. He has represented clients in the Jack Abramoff and Valerie Plame investigations and previously defended former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Wen Ho Lee.
Acevedo Vila and 12 associates in Puerto Rico, Philadelphia and Rockville, Md. were charged in a 27-count indictment alleging conspiracy to violate federal campaign laws, wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the IRS and filing a false tax return. He was expected to turn himself in to federal authorities later today.
Last year, Green and Acevedo Vila attempted to link the two-year grand jury investigation to politicized decision-making at the Justice Department, which was reeling from the purge of nine U.S. Attorneys.
